CHILDREN AND ANXIETY: AN EXPLORATION

The purpose of this project is to explore the area of children and anxiety and how games might be able to help children learn the skills to combat anxiety. Along with research is the beginning stages of a prototype to address this area of research that can be further expanded later. The final report can be read in the PDF below.

Goals

  • Give children (ages 8-10) the skills/techniques to combat anxiety that aren't framed as "techniques" and they can recall later

  • Combine the disciplines of game design and experience design

  • Expose and provide awareness to children and anxiety

Big Ideas

  • Having a situation (that causes anxiety) that needs to be addressed

  • Being given the “tools” to decide what response to take

  • Practice making decisions that can be applied to real life experiences

Research

The question I wanted to explore, which is addressed in my literature review, was how games have been used to explore the issues surrounding anxiety, specifically in children. I focused specifically on the areas around play therapy, game therapy, and videogames and mobile games.
